EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Oversees and participates in research and management activities associated with endangered Colorado River fish and other native aquatic species in the upper Colorado River Basin; analyzes and interprets data for written and oral presentation; coordinates with federal, state, local, and private entities for completion of project activities; prepares, plans, organizes and coordinates all work to meet deadlines; analyzes all data collected for projects and makes recommendations regarding future activities and endangered fish needs to project leader and regional manager; performs administrative duties including work plans, annual progress reports, project completion reports, time sheets, vehicle reports, etc.; supervises seasonal employees; performs other related duties as assigned. Applicants MUST be agreeable to mechanical removal and disposition of nonnative fish species using various approaches.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS:
Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form; ability to work independently and with the public; must have well established communications and negotiations skills with a demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate numerous programs; experience in scientific technical writing and research skills; requires computer skills; field survey experience; principles, methods and techniques of management; ability to supervise. Requires long field trips in adverse weather conditions.

Preference may be given to applicants with a M.S. degree in fisheries management, ecology or biology. Experience handling endangered fishes and/or river running on class II-IV white water rivers is preferred.

Working Conditions: Work will be performed outdoors possibly in extreme weather conditions. Incumbent must be able to row a boat for long periods of time and will be required to camp in a remote river setting. Biologists will spend over 100 days on the river in a typical season. Field trips range from day trips to 9 day trips in remote locations.

Native Fisheries Tech Application Period Closed

Native Fisheries Technician
Salary: $10.99 – $17.41/hr

Position title, agency/location: Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources - Moab Field station is seeking to fill seven (7) Wildlife Technician I positions. These are nine-month positions without benefits available in Moab, Utah. The Starting date is March 5 and will continue through the first week of November of 2012. Consideration for alternate begin/end dates will be given if applicant is actively pursuing a degree.

Responsibilities: Assist with various field projects involving native and endangered species of fish on the Green, Colorado, and San Juan rivers. Duties include monitoring of native and nonnative fish populations, using seining, raft mounted electrofishing, trammel-netting, and larval light traps. All field work is carried out during river trips which last up to 9 days. Technicians will be expected to row rafts, motor skiffs and become proficient with all collection techniques. Following field trips technicians clean and maintain equipment, and prepare for future trips. Applicants MUST be agreeable to mechanical removal and disposition of nonnative fish species. Project technicians will also be responsible for data collection and organization.

Qualifications: Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule under harsh and adverse field conditions and camp while conducting fieldwork. Applicants must be willing and capable of performing physically taxing tasks and working outdoors in hot and/or rainy/cold weather. Field trips range from day trips to nine day trips in remote canyon locations. Applicants are required to be over 18 years of age, possess a valid drivers license, and provide proof of citizenship. Preference may be given to applicants with a degree in biological sciences, ecology, zoology, wildlife or fisheries management. Desired experience incluldes: boating with whitewater rafts and Jon boats w/outboards, electrofishing experience, fish species identification, backcountry or whitewater safety training, the ability to work independently, and mechanical aptitude. Housing is NOT provided although meals, tents, sleeping pads, dry bags and all camp gear are supplied during fieldwork.
