Native Fisheries Technician (WILDLIFE TECHNICIAN I/II)

The
Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources, is
seeking to fill multiple seasonal positions (no benefits) at the Moab Field
Station in Moab, Utah. Full-season appointments will last from April 17-November
3, 2023. Part time appointments will last from April 17-June 12, 2023, with the
potential of extending the end date depending on project needs. Housing is not
provided.
Job Duties
Wildlife
Technicians will assist with
various field projects researching, monitoring, and managing native and
endangered fishes on the Green, Colorado, and San Juan Rivers and Lake
Powell. Duties include collecting field data on native and nonnative fish
populations using seines, raft and jon boat electrofishers, trammel nets,
hoop nets, larval light traps, and submersible PIT antennas. All field work is
carried out during multi-day river trips up to ten days in duration. Work
schedule is field-intensive and highly variable. Technicians will be expected
to row rafts, motor boats and become proficient with all collection
techniques, fish identification and tagging. Crew members are also
responsible for trip preparation and clean-up, camp cooking, maintenance and
repair of equipment, some data entry, and participation in public outreach
activities. Applicants MUST be agreeable to mechanical removal and disposal of
nonnative fish. Typically, new hires will start as a Technician I and only when
they have learned and demonstrated advanced skills, competency, and familiarity
with Moab Field Station sampling reaches, equipment, and protocols will they be
considered for a promotion to a Technician II. Applicants will only be considered
for Technician II positions if their resume demonstrates advanced proficiency
with fish identification, handling, sampling, data collection, whitewater
rowing, motoring, and general equipment maintenance specific to the work
performed at the Moab Field Station.
Job
Requirements and Skills
Wildlife
Technician I: Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule under
harsh and adverse field conditions and camp while conducting fieldwork.
Applicants must be willing to and capable of performing physically taxing tasks
and working outdoors in hot and/or rainy/cold weather. Field trips range from
three to ten day trips in remote canyon locations. Applicants are required
to be over 18 years of age, possess a valid driver’s license, and provide proof
of citizenship. Desired experience includes: scientific data collection,
whitewater rafting, motorized boat operation and maintenance, boat-mounted
electrofishing, fish netting and seining, fish identification, backcountry
or whitewater safety training, the ability to work independently, attention to
detail and mechanical aptitude. Preference will be given to those applicants
possessing a degree in the natural sciences and/or with wilderness medicine and
swiftwater rescue training. Additional preference will be given to those
applicants with mechanical and troubleshooting skills, experience boating on
desert rivers, and experience working with desert fishes. Housing is NOT provided
although food, tents, sleeping pads, dry bags, PFDs, and all camp
gear are supplied during overnight fieldwork.
Wildlife
Technician II: Technician II positions are typically reserved for returning
technicians who have learned and demonstrated advanced skills, competency, and
familiarity with Moab Field Station sampling reaches, equipment, and protocols.
New applicants may be considered for a Technician II position if they possess a
high level of proficiency with the above Technician I requirements as well as
experience in a leadership position and strong verbal and written communication
skills. Applicants must be able to work independently with little to no
oversight. Applicants must have boating (whitewater and/or motorized) and
fisheries experience specific to the species, systems, and sampling methodology
with which we work.
